San Francisco Botanical Garden is a public/private partnership between San Francisco Botanical Garden Society and the San Francisco Recreation and Park Department.

Visitor Experience

  • Bookstore, Library, and Plant Arbor Volunteers: Work directly with staff to assist visitors at these locations.

  • Docent Program: Guide tours and other on-site docent activities. Next training starts November 14, 2019.

Horticulture & Gardening

  • Green Team: Assist Horticultural staff with Garden maintenance, such as weeding, raking and mulching. No experience necessary!

  • Gardener’s Assistant: Work one on one or in a small team to support one gardener or collection. Training is provided but some horticulture experience is required. Minimum commitment 4 mo.

  • Nursery Volunteer: Grow and maintain plants to sell at the Plant Arbor and plant sales. Sign up below to be notified of new openings in the nursery.  

Nursery applicants will be contacted once we are able to accept new volunteers. Your application will remain on file until then. Thank you for your patience!

Youth Education

  • Children’s Walk Guide: Lead small school groups of children through the Garden. Weekday mornings, 10am-12pm. Minimum commitment 20 walks per year. Next training starts September 2019. 

  • Children’s Program Aides: Assist with school programs in the Children’s Garden, weekday mornings in spring and fall.
