San Francisco Botanical Garden is a public/private partnership between San Francisco Botanical Garden Society and the San Francisco Recreation and Park Department.

Contribute your skills and join a community of plant lovers! 

Volunteers support nearly every area of the Garden’s operations.

Visitor Experience

  • Bookstore, Library, and Plant Arbor Volunteers: Work directly with staff to assist visitors at these locations.

  • Docent Program: Guide tours and other on-site docent activities. Spring Docent Training will be 2nd & 4th Thursdays, 10am-3pm, March 12-June 25.

Horticulture & Gardening

  • Green Team: Assist Horticultural staff with Garden maintenance, such as weeding, raking and mulching. No experience necessary!

  • Gardener’s Assistant: Work one on one or in a small team to support one gardener or collection. Training is provided but some horticulture experience is required. Minimum commitment 4 mo.

Youth Education

  • Children’s Walk Guide: Lead small school groups of children through the Garden. Weekday mornings, 10am-12pm. Minimum commitment 20 walks per year. Trainings are offered twice yearly. Click below to apply.   

  • Children’s Program Aides: Assist with school programs in the Children’s Garden, weekday mornings in spring and fall.
