New Nursery for San Francisco Botanical Garden
“The Heart of the Garden”
-
Scheduled to open in Spring 2022, the new complex will be approximately 40,000 square feet. It will enable us to fulfill our vital role as a world-class Botanical Garden, in service to the public while also supporting global conservation efforts.
-
We've already received 90% of the funds needed to reach our $7 million fundraising goal. With a generous matching challenge from longtime nursery volunteer and board chair Delle Maxwell and her husband Patrick Hanrahan, all gifts received by December 31, 2020 will be matched dollar for dollar.

Garden staff partnered with award-winning design firm Siegel & Strain to develop this new nursery replacement and consolidation project.
-
The new facility will allow us to:
-
Welcome plants from other institutions and care for rare, endangered, and unique species
-
Implement best practices for plant propagation and overall nursery operations
-
Improve safety and workflow to support our dedicated staff, horticultural team, and volunteers
-
Modernize our retail operation to offer noteworthy plants not commercially available
-
Enhance maintenance, security, and efficiency with centralized storage for equipment, tools, materials, and vehicles used throughout the Garden
-

The efforts of long-time volunteers to cultivate plants in the current facility are deeply appreciated. Everyone is encouraged to continue volunteering at the Garden during and after the transition. Until the nursery re-opens, volunteers may choose to support other plant nurseries in San Francisco, including the Nursery in Golden Gate Park at 100 MLK Drive, San Francisco.

The City and County of San Francisco through the Recreation and Park Department has committed 24% of the total costs of this project.
