Proof of San Francisco residency:

  • A California driver license or ID showing your San Francisco address is best for proof of residency.

  • A recent utility bill, lease, or other official documentation showing your San Francisco address as well as a photo ID is acceptable too.

  • Digital proof on your smart phone (i.e. photo of your ID, screenshot of your utility bill) is acceptable. 

Veteran definition:

A person who is currently serving in the active military, naval, air, or space service, or who has completed such service and was discharged or released therefrom under conditions other than dishonorable

San Francisco Botanical Garden is located in Golden Gate Park, near the corner of Ninth Avenue and Lincoln Way. 


There are two entrances, the Main Gate near Ninth Avenue, just inside the Park, and the Friend (North) Gate on Martin Luther King Jr. Drive, just steps from the Japanese Tea Garden, de Young Museum, and California Academy of Sciences.

The Garden is served by several public transit routes such as the N-Judah streetcar, 44, 28, 29, 7, 6, and 43 buses.

Parking for cars and bicycles is conveniently located in the Music Concourse Garage. Access to Music Concourse Garage parking is from Martin Luther King, Jr. Dr. across from the Botanical Garden (enter the park at 9th Ave and Lincoln Way, garage entrance will be third right) or Fulton Street at 10th Avenue. The south pod (Cal Academy side) of the garage is closest to the Botanical Garden. Parking in the 800 space garage is encouraged. 


Limited street parking is available in Golden Gate Park.

Additional bike parking is available at both the Main and Friend (North) entrances.

Garage Hours: 

  • 7am–7pm; Open other evening hours for scheduled events


Garage Hourly Rates:

  • $5.25 weekdays, $29.00 maximum

  • $6.25 weekends, $33.00 maximum

  • Monthly parking: $240 per month


The free Golden Gate Park Shuttle offers access to the Botanical Garden and the eastern half of Golden Gate Park with stops along JFK Drive, Stow Lake Boathouse, Haight Street, and at the Music Concourse near the Japanese Tea Garden and de Young Museum. The shuttle stop is a short walk to the Friend (North) Gate entrance of the Botanical Garden. The shuttle operates daily:

  • Monday to Friday from 12:00pm to 6:00pm

  • Saturday, Sundays and holidays from 10:00am to 6:00pm

Wheelchair Access

Most of the Garden's pathways are wheelchair accessible, and accessible pathways are marked on wayfinding signage with the ISA symbol. Complimentary wheelchairs are available at either Garden entrance on a first come, first served basis. 

Restrooms and Pathways

Accessible restrooms are located near the Friend (North) Gate, at the Botanical Garden at Martin Luther King Jr. Drive and Tea Garden Drive. 

There are also restrooms inside the Library building adjacent to the main entrance, and near the Great Meadow. These restrooms are not accessible. See the visitor map for accessible restrooms and paths.

In order to ensure the enjoyment for all visitors please abide by the following rules:

  • No Wheeled Vehicles (Except for Wheelchairs and Strollers)

  • No Littering

  • No Pets

  • No Feeding Wildlife

  • No Smoking

  • No Picking or Stepping on Plants 

  • No Tree Climbing

  • No Playing Sports

  • No Camping
